About the Author

Jennifer Cumberland is a Registered Nurse with a Bachelor’s degree in the Science of Nursing from Ohio University. She has 18 plus years’ experience caring for those with acute and chronic illnesses, community and public health issues, infectious and communicable diseases, and those with varying socioeconomic backgrounds. She also has experience in caring for the very young up through the elderly populations. Her passion lies in holistic and alternative care with a strong background in conventional, Western medicine. She enjoys educating people on holistic healthcare and wellness on her blog nursemender.com. Jennifer believes that with prevention, education, and compassion we can improve one’s overall quality of life, health, and emotional well being.

Course Description

This course is designed for nurse clinicians that need clarification of self-care and ways to successfully achieve it in today’s fast-paced world of healthcare settings. The purpose of this course is to provide nurses with a deeper understanding of self-care and ways to fulfill the personal and professional obligation of self-care. After taking this course, the learner should be able to adequately describe self-care, identify barriers and enablers of self-care, and identify techniques he or she may incorporate to improve overall well being.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the Nurse:

  • Will be able to define self-care
  • Will understand policies, protocols and practices in self-care
  • Will become knowledgeable of the current state of self-care
  • Will learn about the barriers in self-care
  • Will understand self -care strategies
  • Will learn about the culture of self-care

Faculty

Jennifer Cumberland, BSN RN

Jennifer is a Registered Nurse with 18 years of experience in caring for those with acute and chronic illnesses. Additionally, she has experience working in community and public health sectors. This work has allowed Jennifer to gain firsthand experience in preventing and controlling infectious and communicable diseases through her services in school nursing and nursing case management. Jennifer has experience in caring for varying cultures, ages, and socio-economic backgrounds. Her passion lies in holistic and alternative care with a strong background in conventional, Western medicine. Jennifer believes that with prevention, education, and compassion we can improve one’s quality of life, overall health, and emotional wellbeing.

Areas of Expertise: Registered Nurse, BSN, with experience in the fields of Medical-Surgical Nursing, Community Health, Communicable Disease, Endoscopy, Gastrointestinal, School Nursing, Medical Writing/Editing, and Nursing Case Management.

Successful completion of this course will provide the learner with one (1) contact hour. This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the Virginia Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation To receive credit for this course you must pass this test with a score of 80% or higher. No individual in a position to control content for this activity has any relevant financial relationships to declare. Contact hours will be provided for the completion of this activity from September 10, 2018 until September 18, 2020.
